Background: Colonel W. C. Acquaye-Nortey, Regional Commissioner for the Greater Accra Region, opened a one-day Food Fair at the Accra Community Centre on Friday (11 August).
The exhibition of Ghanaian foods and dishes is designed to promote the "Eat More Local Food" campaign that has been organised by the Greater Accra Region, with the assistance of the Ministry of Health.
In a larger sense, the Fair is in response to the "Operation Feed Yourself" programme launched a fe months ago. That programme was introduced by Ghana's National Redemption Council after it came to power in January's coup. Designed to encourage agricultural development, "Operation Feed Yourself" relies on voluntary labour to cultivate lands and harvest crops in freshly-developed areas.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Food Fair, Colonel Acquaye-Nortey said that the aim of the Fair was to encourage the public to eat more local food and discard imported agricultural products.
