  • Description

The number of dead in pakistan's earthquake catastrophe rose to more than five thousand today (December 31) as reports filtered in from devastated mountain villages cut off for more than three days.

The full extent of the damage is still not known and army officials directing relief operations are saying that some 16,000 people have been injured as well as those killed.

The earthquake erupted in the Karakoran mountains in northern Pakistan last Saturday. The first rescue teams flew in by helicopter and reported massive devastation among villages which now lie in ruins.

Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto flew into the disaster zone today and immediately appealed for international aid to help the victims.

The core of the tragedy is a string of hamlets in the valley of the river Indus which flows through the Karakoran mountains some two hundred miles north of the Pakistan capital, Islamabad. Hundreds of houses in the villages collapsed when the earthquake ripped through the valley and it is only now - days after the event - that the full horror is becoming known.
