  • Description

The Institute of High-Pressure Physics is the centre of research into the effects of high pressures on varying substances.

Suchlike pressures of an order of many hundred thousand atmospheres are met with in mature at the Earth's centre, or in volcanic craters, or this is the gigantic temperature of smelted matter.

Amazing transformations occur in this "natural" hot camera, whereby brittles assume plasticity, soft substances become hard, conductors turn into dielectrics, and non-metals acquire metallic properties, Here, too, fiery rubies are born from clay and graphite is turns ed to diamonds...

But how can the processes be remodelled in laboratory and then on the scale of industrial manufacture - is the question facing science.

The Soviet Union has started off with mass-production of synthetic diamonds. A new industry has come into being.

Diamond synthesis techniques were developed at the Institute of High Pressures under academician Leonid Verestchagin.

In terms of their cutting properties diamond-structure chrystals are equal and at times superior to natural stones. Their applications in industry become increasingly diverse.

The Institute of High-Pressure Physics goes forward seeking for new transformations. Time has come to experiment with pressure rates of million atmospheres and more.
