    THE SOUTH KOREAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTED MR. YOON BO-SUN PRESIDENT OF KOREA AT A JOINT SESSION OF THE ASSEMBLY'S TWO HOUSES LAST FRIDAY, AUGUST 12.

    MR. GEORGE PAIK, SPEAKER OF THE JOINT SESSION, LATER ANNOUNCED THAT MR. YOON WOULD BE INSTALLED THE NEXT DAY.

    MR. YOON WHO BELONGS TO THE "OLD" FACTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WON BY 208 VOTES TO 29 VOTES POLLED BY KIM CHANG SOOK, CONFUCIAN LEADER AND A FORMER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT. THE OUTGOING PRIME MINSTER MR. HUH CHUNG, WHO TOOK OVER WHEN RHEE RESIGNED, POLLED ONLY THREE VOTES.

    MR. YOON, THE SIXTYTHREE-YEAR-OLD SECOND PRESIDENT OF KOREA, WAS FORMERLY THE MAYOR OF SEOUL AND A FORMER MINISTER.

    A DEVOTED PRESBYTERIAN, MR. YOON IS MARRIED WITH TWO SONS AGED 13 AND NINE. HIS MOTHER, AGED 80, IS STILL ALIVE.

    HE HAS AT LEAST ONE HOBBY IN COMMON WITH THE FORMER PRESIDENT SYNGMAN RHEE, OUSTED AFTER THE VIOLENT RIOTS EARLIER THIS YEAR - GARDENING.
