    THE TRADITIONAL PARIS MOTOR SHOW OPENED TODAY. WITH MANY OF THE MAJOR CAR MANUFACTURERS FROM FRANCE AND ABROAD EXHIBITING. GENERAL DE GAULLE WILL VISIT THE SHOW TOMORROW (FRIDAY).

    THE SHOW EXHIBITS 110 MAKES OF CARS, AS WELL AS MOTORCYCLES AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. ALTOGETHER 1,300 COMPANIES FROM 23 COUNTRIES ARE DISPLAYING THEIR PRODUCTS.

    THE SHOW TAKES PLACE IN THE WAKE OF HUGE MERGERS IN THE EUROPEAN MOTOR INDUSTRY, PARTLY TO CONSOLIDATE NATIONAL INDUSTRIES IN THE FACE OF COMPETITION FROM THE UNITED STATES. THE FIRMS TO MERGE INCLUDE THE BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION WHICH MERGED WITH LEYLAND MOTORS TO FORM A BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORPORATION. SIR DONALD STOKES THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE COMPANY ANNOUNCED IN PARIS TODAY THAT BRITISH LEYLAND WILL INVEST GBP200 MILLION OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. PART OF THIS INVESTMENT WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ASSEMBLY PLANTS WITHIN THE COMMON MARKET. THE OTHER BIG MERGER BEING PLANNED IS THAT BETWEEN FIAT OF ITALY AND THE FRENCH COMPANY CITROEN, WHICH IF IT GOES THROUGH WILL FORM ONE OF THE LARGEST MOTOR COMBINES IN THE WORLD.

    THIS YEAR'S WINNER OF THE LE MANS 24 HOURS ENDURANCE RACE, A FORD GT 40, WILL BE ON DISPLAY, AS WELL AS A NEW ALFA ROMEO STYLED BY THE ITALIAN DESIGNER BERTONE.
