    The Republic of Chad last week (Thursday, 11 January) celebrated the thirteenth anniversary of its independence from France with a military parade in the capital, Fort Lamy.

    President Francois Tombalbaye -- who has been Chad's head of state since independence in 1960 -- inspected the parade accompanied by General Felix Malloum, Commander in Chief of the Chad Army.

    SYNOPSIS: The Republic of Chad celebrated its thirteenth anniversary of independence last week, with a military parade in the capital, Fort Lamy. President Tombalbaye was joined by Army General Felix Malloum in inspecting the army units... Chad has more than two thousand six-hundred men in its armed forces, and each year spends about twelve per cent of its budget on defence. The biggest of the services is the Army, which consists of two infantry battalions and a paratroop company.

    Air Force units also took part in the National Day ceremonies... President Tombalbaye has led the country since it gained its independence from France in 1960. The highlight of these anniversary celebrations was this mass march-past in Fort Lamy's Independence Square.
