  • Description

IN DJAKARTA, STUDENTS CONTINUE TO PRESS FOR THE DISMISSAL OF PRESIDENT SUKARNO. ON TUESDAY (FEBRUARY 14), MEMBERS OF KAMI -- THE STUDENT ACTION FRONT -- HANDED A PETITION TO THE PEOPLE'S CONSULTATIVE CONGRESS, THE NATION'S HIGHEST POLICY-MAKING BODY, URGING THAT THE PRESIDENT BE OUSTED. BUT PRESIDENT SUKARNO IS KEEPING TO THE FOREFRONT: YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) HE INSTALLED SIX NEW AMBASSADORS.

THE STUDENTS' PETITION DEMANDED THERE BE ONLY ONE ITEM ON THE AGENDA WHEN CONGRESS MEETS ON MARCH 6TH -- THEIR DEMAND THAT PRESIDENT SUKARNO BE DISMISSED.

WHILE THE STUDENTS CONVERGED OUTSIDE THE CONGRESS BUILDING AND WERE ADDRESSED BY ITS VICE-PRESIDENT, MR SUBCHAN, THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF CONGRESS WAS IN SESSION PLANNING NEXT MONTH'S FULL INQUIRY INTO THE PRESIDENT'S LEADERSHIP.

SEVERAL ARMOURED VEHICLES AND SCORES OF TROOPS TOOK UP POSITIONS AROUND THE STUDENTS BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.

YESTERDAY, PRESIDENT SUKARNO INSTALLED SIX NEW AMBASSADORS IN A COLOURFUL CEREMONY AT THE STATE PALACE IN DJAKARTA. THREE OF THE AMBASSADOR ARE CIVILIANS, TWO ARE ARMY GENERALS AND ONE A POLICE GENERAL.
