  • Description

A huge Buddhist temple which can seat 5,400 worshippers was opened at Daisekiji in Japan on Sunday (1 October).

The Sho Hondo (mystic temple) nestles in the foothills of sacred Mount Fuji and will provide the spiritual headquarters for the eight million followers of the Soka Gakkai Buddhist sect. (Also known as the Nicheren Shoshu sect).

Five thousand followers of the sect attended the opening service, led by President Daisaku Ikeda, head of the Soka Gakkai.

The Sho Hondo took four years to build at a cost of 48,000 million yen (about GBP65 million sterling).

The temple has been lavishly constructed, with pillars lined with marble from Greece and the roof built in the form of a crane with outstretched wings -- emblem of the Soka Gakkai movement and a symbol of peace.

SYNOPSIS: A new temple opened near the sacred Mount Fuji in Japan last Sunday is now the spiritual centre for eight million Buddhists who adhere to the Soka Gakkai sect.

It replaces an old temple built three hundred years ago. The Soka Gakkai sect was formed in the thirteenth century and has grown spectacularly in size in the last decade.

A lotus-shaped fountain greets visitors to the new Sho Hondo, or temple, and leads to a colonnade which supports the main entrance. Each of the columns is sheathed in marble brought from Greece. The Sho Hondo took four years to build at a cost of sixty five million pounds....all of it raised in just four days by Soka Gakkai followers.

White robed priests and five thousand followers attended the opening ceremony, led by Daisaku Ikeda, President of the Saka Gakkai.

In all, the Sho Hondo can seat five thousand four hundred worshippers, drawn together in a belief that prayer will; bring human happiness and a peaceful society.
