• Short Summary

Sixty-years old Dr. Robert Soble, supervising psychiatrist at a New York suburb hospital, was taken?

  • Description

Sixty-years old Dr. Robert Soble, supervising psychiatrist at a New York suburb hospital, was taken to the city's Federal Courts Nov 30 and charged with war-time spying for the Soviet Union. If convicted, he could be sentenced to death. Bail was set at seventy-five thousand dollars until a Dec 20 hearing.

Dr. Soble is a brother of confessed Soviet spy Jack Soble, now serving a sentence of seven years imprisonment after a 1957 conviction. Naturalized in 1947, both brothers are charged by the U.S. Government as having belonged to two separate rings that sought national defence secrets for transmission to the Soviet Union.

An indictment against Dr. Soble, which also names eighteen co-conspirators, accuses him of conspiring with his brother and Soviet officials to procure information on personnel, activities, and the organisation of America's Office of Strategic Services, and other departments dealing with intelligence and counter-intelligence in America and Germany.

On the second count, Soble is accused of passing photographs of an atomic weapon centre over to the Russians in 1950.
