  • Description

FILM AND PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN IN RHODESIA TO BE SENT OVERSEAS WILL BE SUBJECT TO CENSORSHIP. THIS FOLLOWS THE IMPOSITION OF CENSORSHIP ON RHODESIAN PUBLICATIONS - WHICH THE RHODESIAN HERALD DREW ATTENTION TO TODAY (FRIDAY) BY CARRYING BLANK SPACES.

THE RHODESIAN HERALD CARRIED A BLANK EDITORIAL COLUMN TODAY FOR THE FIRST SINCE ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN SALISBURY IN 1891. THE HERALD HAS ALWAYS OPPOSED ANY POSSIBILITY OF A RHODESIAN UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (UDI), SUCH AS THAT ANNOUNCED IN SALISBURY YESTERDAY BY MR. IAN SMITH.

A MEMBER OF THE IAN SMITH CABINET, MR. PIETER VAN DE BYL, SAID IN SALISBURY TODAY THAT THE AIM OF CENSORSHIP IN RHODESIA WAS TO STOP PUBLICATION OF ITEMS "HIGHLY BIASED AND DISTORTED" THAT COULD "EXCITE AND INFLAME UNDULY, ESPECIALLY AMONGST THE LESS SOPHISTICATED PARTS OF OUR POPULATION".
