  • Description

The French Police called a press conference at the Interior Ministry in Paris, March 7, to announce the end of the nation-wide eleven-month-long hunt for the kidnappers of the Peugeot child.

French Surete Chief jean Verdier told newsmen two men had fully confessed how they planned the kidnapping and collected a ransom worth GBP36,000 for the French car magnate's son, five-year-old Eric Peugeot last April.

The two men, known for their lavish spending in fashionable French resorts, admitted spending nearly all the ransom money. One of the men said he thought of the idea of kidnapping to make easy money after reading a cheap novel.

    M. Verdier said that with an accomplice the man picked out the Peugeot's name from a directory of rich French families. Learning the Peugeot child was taken for a daily walk, one of the men snatched him while his accomplice waited in a stolen car.

The first real clue came seven months after the kidnapping when investigators found that two ransom notes had been typed in capital letters on a machine used by one of the men for business correspondence. The capital letters showed the same defects of type in the ransom notes.

Three of four other persons questioned, including a Miss Denmark beauty queen, were cleared of the kidnap charge but were being held for further inquires. A Striptease dancer was cleared completely. The two who confessed: Raymond Rolland, 24, and Pierre Larcher, 38.
