  • Description

THE NIGER MOTOR BRIDGE NEAR ONITSHA, IN NIGERIA, WAS REOPENED TO TRAFFIC ON THURSDAY (MARCH 26TH) FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE RETREATING BIAFRAN SECESSIONIST TROOPS WRECKED THE EASTERN SECTION DURING THE RECENT CIVIL WAR.

THE SIX-AND-A-HALF-MILLION POUND STERLING (APPROX: 14-MILLION U.S. DOLLARS) BRIDGE WAS ORIGINALLY OPENED A FEW DAYS BEFORE NIGERIA'S FIRST MILITARY COUP IN JANUARY, 1966. IT WAS DYNAMITED A YEAR LATER IN A BID TO STOP THE FEDERAL ADVANCE.

NIGERIAN ARMY ENGINEERS, ASSISTED BY A GROUP OF EUROPEANS EMPLOYED BY A GERMAN CONSTRUCTION FIRM, CARRIED OUT TEMPORARY REPAIRS TO ENABLE TRAFFIC TO FLOW FROM THE ASSABA END IN THE MID-WEST STATE AND THE ONITSHA END IN THE EAST-CENTRAL STATE.

THE WEST GERMAN AMBASSADOR, MR. AXENFELD, REPRESENTED HIS GOVERNMENT AT THE RE-OPENING CEREMONY. WEST GERMANY GAVE A GRANT OF 116-THOUSAND-POUNDS STERLING (APPROX; 223-THOUSAND U.S. DOLLARS) TOWARDS THE RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME.

THE FEDERAL COMMISSIONER FOR WORKS AND HOUSING, MR. FEMI OKUNU, FORMALLY OPENED THE NEW EXTENSION WHICH REPLACES TWO OF THE DAMAGED SPANS.

ARMY TRANSPORTS; RED CROSS TRUCKS AND PRIVATE CARS ROLLED FORWARD IN A STEADY FLOW ACROSS THE MILE-WIDE BRIDGE AT ROUGHLY ONE-HUNDRED TIMES THE RATE AT WHICH CROSS-RIVER FERRIES HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE SINCE THE WAR.
