  • Description

FRENCH PRIME MINISTER GEORGES POMPIDOU SAID TODAY (TUESDAY) AFTER A ONE-HOUR MEETING WITH GENERAL DE GAULLE THAT HE FELT THE PRESIDENT DID NOT PLAN A CABINET RESHUFFLE. THE PRIME MINISTER SAID THERE WOULD BE NO RESIGNATIONS FROM THE CABINET BEFORE THE NEW NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEETS NEXT MONTH.

TODAY'S MEETING WAS THE FIRST BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS SINCE THE SECOND ROUND OF THE GENERAL ELECTIONS ON SUNDAY IN WHICH THE GAULLISTS LOST 40 SEATS AND SCRAPED HOME WITH A BARE MAJORITY IN THE ASSEMBLY.

ASKED WHETHER HE PLANNED TO RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU WAS REPORTED AS SAYING - "I AM NOT THE RESIGNING TYPE".

THE SHARP SETBACK SUFFERED BY THE GAULLISTS IS NOT EXPECTED TO HAVE ANY GREAT EFFECT ON PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S GOVERNMENT OR POLICIES, ACCORDING TO POLITICAL OBSERVERS. ALTHOUGH A PAINFUL BLOW TO THE PARTY'S PRESTIGE, IT WILL NOT IMPAIR THE GOVERNMENT'S ABILITY TO CARRY ON GOVERNING AS BEFORE.

UNDER THE CONSTITUTION, THE PRESIDENT APPOINTS HIS OWN MINISTERS AND IS NOT OBLIGED TO ANNOUNCE A NEW GOVERNMENT TEAM FOLLOWING NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS. OBSERVERS BELIEVE THAT ANY CHANGES IN POLICY BY THE PRESIDENT WILL BE MINOR ONES.
