  • Description

The setting in of the winter herald the harvest season in Burma, the biggest exporter of rice, and charities are offered the Buddhist monks and priests in anticipation of a good harvest.

The central Burmese town of Naung Shwe where these pictures were taken is typical of any Burmese city in the pre-harvest period, where Burmese men and women dressed in their best offer the monks cooked food, delicacies and other utilities. The usual belief is that the pleased monks will pray to Gods to bestow on the worshippers His blessings in the form of a good harvest, which after all means everything to the average peasant.

This is an annual affair, as the golden yellow harvest is, and thousands of priests clad in their saffron robes from all over the country turn up to receive the offerings by the people.

They go about the town in a procession and offer prayers individually and collectively so that a good harvest may result and the hope of a land of plenty become a reality.

To the people it is an auspicious occasion not only to give, but also to receive the blessings from the venerable monks.
