  • Description

Israeli officials said that attempts to call a general strike yesterday (Tuesday) among Arabs on the Israeli-occupied West Bank of Jordan appeared to fail. The strike was intended as a protest and timed to coincide with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.

Only in two towns did the majority of shopkeepers observe the strike.

Israeli officials said that on the whole it was business as usual in the occupied areas yesterday.

Those observing the strike called by the Arab "Higher Committee for National Guidance in the West Bank" were at Ramallah, north of Jerusalem, and at Nablus. Elsewhere, including the former Arab part of Jerusalem, the strike call was apparently ignored.

There were, however, more Israeli police, troops and frontier guards than usual on the streets in occupied areas.

In Nablus, all the shops except for two restaurants opposite the office of the military governor remained closed and almost the entire population of the town stayed indoors.
