    The treaty establishing the West African Economic Community (CEAO) was signed in Bamako, Mali Republic on June 3 by representatives of the seven participating countries.

    The seventy-page document was singed for the Ivory Coast by President Houphouet-Boigny, for Upper Volta by General Sangoule Lamizana and for Dahomey by a senior government official.

    President Moussa Traere signed for the Mlai Republic and Mauritanian President Maktar Ould Daddah, President Diori Hamani of Niger and President Leopold Senghor of Senegal added their signatures during the ceremony marking the end of the two day CEAO summit.

    Togo, which attended the conference as an observer, did not sign the treaty.

    The new community is designed to replace the existing West African customs Union with a new economic grouping aimed at expanding trade between its members.

    SYNOPSIS: Ivory Coast President Hophouet-Buigny was one of seven heads of state to arrive last week at Bamako Airport in the Mali Republic. He was greeted by the President of Mali, Meussa Traore. Tamake was the sits for the signing of a treaty establishing the West African Economic Community. This economic community is one stope towards a community embracing the entire African continent. The organisation, designed to replace the existing West African Customs Union with a new economic grouping is aimed at expanding trade between its members.

    The treaty document was signed by President Boigny and President Traore as well as General Sangoule Lamizana for Upper Volta, and a senior government official for Dahemey.... President Moktar Ould Daddah signed for Mauritania, President Diroi Hamani for Niger and President Leopold Senghor of Senegal added his signature during the ceremony, marking the end of the two-day summit. The heads of state agreed during the meetings that they would meet again in December.
