    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE HAS HAILED FRANCE'S PROGRESS TOWARDS POSSESSION OF THE HYDROGEN BOMB AS HAVING IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR THE NATION'S FUTURE AND FOR WORLD PEACE. THE PRESIDENT IS BACK IN PARIS AFTER A WORLD TRIP, DURING WHICH HE WITNESSED A NUCLEAR TEST EARLIER THIS WEEK AT FRANCE'S ATOMIC TESTING GROUND IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC.

    THE TEST TOOK PLACE IN THE VICINITY OF MURUROA ATOLL, WHERE FRANCE'S FIRST HYDROGEN BOMB WILL BE EXPLODED PROBABLY SOMETIME IN 1968. THE ATOMIC DEVICE WAS EXPLODED WHILE HANGING FROM A BALLOON, AND WAS THE 31ST SET OFF BY FRANCE. MURUROA ATOLL WAS THE HOME OF A FEW HUNDRED POLYNESIANS UNTIL THE FRENCH BEGAN BUILDING ON IT A LITTLE MORE THAN TWO YEARS AGO. SINCE THEN, IT HAS BECOME A BASE FOR ABOUT 10,000 SOLDIERS AND 4,000 CIVILIANS.

    IN A REPORT TO THE FRENCH CABINET IN PARIS ON THURSDAY, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SAID: "THE DAY IS COMING WHEN FRANCE WILL HAVE THERMONUCLEAR ARMS, THAT IS TO SAY, WHEN NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO ATTACK HER. THERE ARE IMPORTANT CONCLUSIONS TO BE DRAWN AS TO OUR FUTURE AND AS TO PEACE.
