  • Description

Turkish President Fahri Koruturk on Friday (23 May) met delegates to the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO) conference being held in Ankara. They included U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger.

Dr. Kissinger also met Foreign Minister Ihsan Sabri Caglayangil and Premier Suleyman Demirel for talks aimed at solving the Cyprus dispute.

He later met former Premier Bulent Ecevit -- the man who ordered the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and is now opposition loader -- and told newsmen: "I think Turkey will make serious efforts to negotiate."
Dr. Kissinger was apparently pressing for results on two fronts. He wants Turkey's warring political parties to patch up their differences and approach the Cyprus issue undivided and he is keen for Turkey to settle the Cyprus issue as a package, rather than on a piecemeal basis.
