  • Description

RAIN IS AN ADDITIONAL HAZARD, PARTICULARLY FOR THE BIG CARS, WHICH TEND TO GET BOGGED DOWN IN THE MUD. AMONG THE NEW CARS ENTERING THIS YEAR'S RALLY ARE THE JAPANESE HIMO AND FOUR JAPANESE NISSANS, THE LATTER SPENT TWO MONTHS IN PREPARATION IN EAST AFRICA. ANOTHER NEW ENTRY IS THE FORD CORTINA, DRIVEN BY BRITISH RALLY STAR PAT MOSS.

AT THE END OF THE FIRST STAGE, HOWEVER, PAT MOSS HAD THREE SEPARATE MISHAPS AND ARRIVED LATE. ONE WING DAMAGED WHEN HER CAR SKIDDED, THE WINDSCREEN WAS DAMAGED BY A STONE, AND ONE SIDE OF THE CAR SLIGHTLY CRUSHED.

MEANWHILE HER FIANCE, ERIK CARLSSON OF SWEDEN, DRIVING A SAAB, LED THE FIELD INTO KAMPALA AFTER THE DIFFICULT 720 KILOMETRES (436 MILES) RUN, ONLY SIX MINUTES LATE, WITH A TOTAL LOSS OF 16 POINTS. (ERIK CARLSSON IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING RALLY DRIVERS -- HE HAS WON THE LAST TWO MONTE CARLO RALLIES).

ALTOGETHER 8 OF THE 84 CARS STARTED FROM NAIROBI, FAILED TO ARRIVE IN KAMPALA. SEVERAL OVERTURNED, BUT NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AMONG CONTESTANTS.
