  • Description

TIDYING-UP OPERATIONS ARE STILL GOING ON, AND AMERICAN HELICOPTERS ARE FERRYING IN SUPPLIES, TO THE SPECIAL FORCES' CAMP AT BEN HET, IN THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, AFTER A 47-DAY SIEGE THAT WAS LIFTED ON TUESDAY (1 JULY) WHEN A FORCE OF 2,400 SOUTH VIETNAMESE DROVE THROUGH DENSE JUNGLE FROM DAK, EIGHT MILES TO THE EAST, TO RELIEVE IT.

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE, WHO FACED A TEST OF THEIR POTENTIAL ABILITY TO STAND ALONE IN THE WAR BY BEING GIVEN THE TASK OF RELIEVING THE CAMP, MET LITTLE NORTH VIETNAMESE OPPOSITION.

THE REMOTE BORDER OUTPOST, BESIEGED FOR TWO MONTHS AND POUNDED BY SHELLS AND MORTARS, HAD BECOME A FOCAL POINT IN A TRIAL OF STRENGTH BETWEEN THE ARMIES OF NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE OCCUPANTS OF THE CAMP -- ABOUT 200 AMERICAN 'GREEN BERETS' AND 450 SOUTH VIETNAMESE MERCENARIES -- ARE SAID TO HAVE CELEBRATED THEIR LIBERATION BY CAVORTING THROUGH THE CAMP AND FEASTING ON PIECES OF PIG AND WATER BUFFALO FERRIED IN BY AMERICAN AIRCRAFT.

BEN HET WAS SELECTED FOR A SHOWDOWN WHEN MOST AMERICAN TROOPS PULLED OUT AND THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE TOOK OVER RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ROLLING MOUNTAINS ADJOINING LAOS AND CAMBODIA LAST FEBRUARY.

DURING THE SIEGE, THE NORTH VIETNAMESE LOBBED ABOUT 6,000 MORTAR BOMBS, ROCKETS, AND ARTILLERY SHELLS ON TO THE DEFENDERS OF BEN HET, KILLING AT LEAST 50 AND WOUNDING MORE THAN 300. ABOUT A QUARTER OF THE CASUALTIES ARE UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE BEEN AMERICANS.
