  • Description

This week, for the first time, a North Korean delegation has been visiting Malaysia. A three-man trade mission arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday and the following day inspected the Rubber Research Institute.

Leader of the mission is Mr Bak Su Kwon, Director of Asian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Trade in Pyongyang. The other two members are from the North Korean Consulate in Singapore.

Mr Bak said North Korea was particularly interested in buying Malaysian rubber and in return selling machinery and chemical products.

At present there is no direct trade between the two countries, though it is known that some Malaysian rubber and Korean dried fish and ginseng is traded by way of dealers in Singapore.

The visit by the North Koreans reflects Malaysia's growing ties with the Communist bloc, especially in Asia. Only last month it received its first delegation from the People's Republic of China.
