  • Description

In four days after the lifting of the curfew on Cypriot youths, bomb attacks broke out in Nicosia again and the curfew was reimposed, October 16.

Visnews caught students hurrying home from school as the curfew siren wailed through the city. The bomb attacks that day started at 7 in the morning. Two were thrown at military vehicles.

Soon after the explosion the curfew was back. All schools immediately stopped. Shops scarcely had time to open before they shut down. Young assistants scrambled for public transport or sped home on bicycle.

But violence on the island continued. That day a British official was shot dead by gunmen in a coffee shop. Another was shot in the back four times. Bomb throwing continued.

Drastic security measures followed: One was a shoot-at-sight order against persons found on roads likely to be planted with mines.
