  • Description

Several thousand Negroes in 14 of the largest towns and cities of Mississippi cast protest ballots in churches Sunday (25 August) to dramatize what they call the whole disenfranchisement of Negroes in the state.

The mock election was held just two days before the Democratic primary runoff for Governor. The Democratic nomination is tantamount to election in Mississippi.

In the mock election...Negroes marked their preference among the two candidates for Governor. Negro leaders said, however, that no attempt will be made to enter the ballots at the polls Tuesday (27 August). The outcome of the protest vote will not be announced until after the official ballots have been counted.
