  • Description

One of Hong Kong's most active and fastest growing industries is carpet manufacturing. It has expanded to such an extent that the largest and most modern hand-made rug factory in the Far East is now in Hong Kong.

This is the Tai Ping carpet factory of the Hong Kong Carpet Manufacturers' Limited. It is situated in the New Territories near the fishing and farming centre of Taipo.

The success of the carpet industry in Hong Kong is largely due to the influx of refugees from China. China's carpet weavers are world famous, with an established reputation that dates back several hundred years. And among the many refugees who entered the British Crown Colony were skilled Chinese weavers.

The combination of their expertise and modern equipment has enabled Hong Kong to export carpets of exquisite design to virtually every country in the world. The palaces of Queen Elizabeth of England, King Phumibol of Thailand, Emperor Haile Selasse of Ethiopia and the Sultan of Brunei have all been carpeted by the largest of Hong Kong's carpet factories, Tai Ping.

Several years ago, the Tai Ping factory produced a massive 12,500 square feet carpet, which weighed over five and a half tons, for the main lobby of the Los Angeles Music Centre in California.

The factory, which employs ???00 workers, ??? ???ly hou???d in a five-storey building with 120,000 square feet of space available for carpet weaving, packing, shearing and carving. It is capable of producing 120,000 square feet of carpet per month.

SYNOPSIS: You can order carpets of various almost any size, shape and design...modern, traditional... from any one of the rapidly expanding carp???t factories in Hong Kong. The expertise of local weavers has made Hong Kong the leading carpet manufacturing centre in the Far East.

You can have one tailor-made... such as this one of an American Express Traveller's Cheque.

At the Tai Ping carpet factory... Hong Kong's largest... the whole process begins with a miniature colour sketch, made according to the wishes of the customer.

From this sketch, different colours of yarn... usually of 100 per cent virgin wool... are selected to match the design. The yarn is spun in England from a blend of New Zealand and British wool, and dyed in the factory's plant. It is then transferred on to spindles.

The design, meanwhile, is enlarged on to heavy cotton backing. Once completed, the weaver is then provided with the necessary coloured y???, and ??? by ???, the carpet design begins to take shape.

Tai Ping employs nine hundred workers, and is capable of producing 120,000 square feet of carpet per month.

One woven, the carpet is clipped for uniform thickness.

    Then painstakingly pressed for smoothness.

When required, the carpet design is etched with scissors... a process which makes it stand out.

Finally, when the carpet has passed an inspection, it is meticulously vacuumed.

It is only then that the carpet leaves this room for its final destination.
