  • Description

The German cyclist, Rudi Altig, is still leading the Tour de France classic after winning yesterday's (Tuesday's) first stage from Nancy to Charleville in northern France.

Altig, received the race leader's yellow jersey yesterday, and although he did not win today's second stage from Charleville to Tournai, he still retains the overall lead.

Altig yesterday covered the 130 miles (208 Kms) to Charleville in four hours 52 minutes and 56 seconds, only 49 seconds ahead of the main group of riders.

He made his break from the field seven miles (12 Kms) from Charleville.

In second position came W. Planckaert, Belgium, and third G. Vanderberghe, Belgium.

The second stage today, 123 miles (198 Kms) from Charleville to Tournai, was won by another Belgian cyclist, Guido Rybroeck.

The Tour de France will last three weeks during which the 130 starters will cover 2,700 miles (4,300 Kms) finishing in Paris. They will have some gruelling sections, particularly when they reach south western France and the alpine districts.
