    CARDINAL STEFAN WYSZYNSKI, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIMATE OF POLAND, ARRIVED IN ROME TODAY (WEDNESDAY). IT IS THE FIRST TIME FOR THREE YEARS THAT HE HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO LEAVE POLAND BY THE GOVERNMENT.

    THE CARDINAL WAS WELCOMED WHEN HE ARRIVED AT ROME CENTRAL STATION ON AN EXPRESS TRAIN FROM VIENNA BY A CHEERING FOUR HUNDRED STRONG CROWD - MANY OF THEM PRIESTS. A POLICE CORDON OF 100 KEPT BACK THE CROWDS AS THE CARDINAL WAS GREETED BY SENIOR VATICAN OFFICIALS. LATER THEY LEFT BY CAR FOR THE POLISH COLLEGE NEAR THE VATICAN WHERE CARDINAL WYSZYNSKI CELEBRATED MASS IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHER POLISH BISHOPS - TWELVE OF THEM ARE NOW IN ROME - AND PRIESTS.

    THE 67-YEAR-OLD CARDINAL WILL STAY IN ROME FOR ABOUT FOUR WEEKS. HE IS OFFICIALLY IN THE CITY ON A REGULATION VISIT IN ACCORDANCE WITH CANON LAW WHICH STIPULATES THAT ALL DIOCESAN BISHOPS MUST CALL ON THE POPE AT LEAST ONCE EVERY FIVE YEARS.

    CARDINAL WYSZYNSKI HAD BEEN FORBIDDEN TO TRAVEL BY THE POLISH GOVERNMENT FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS ON THE GROUNDS OF POLITICAL INTERFERENCE.
