Tennis...and the Rumanian player Ilie Nastase, seeded number nine at Wimbledon, has been banned from major tournaments for three months and fines five thousand dollars. The suspension, announced by the Men's International Tennis Council, has been imposed for what is described as "aggravated behaviour". Nastase learnt of the fine and suspension after he lost his quarter-final match at the Wimbledon tournament on Tuesday (4 July) to Tom Okker of Holland. In another quarter-final the number two seed, Jimmy Connors of the United States, defeated Raul Ramirez of Mexico.
SYNOPSIS: Connors took the lead in his match with Ramirez from the start. He won the first two sets 6-4, 6-4 and shot to a 5-2 lead in the third.
Ramirez had no answer to the powerful serve and fast pace of Connor's game.
Match point with Connors to serve. Ramirez fought hard throughout the match but Connors was ruthless a gainst the number seven seed. The American ended the match with a fine drop volley to leave Ramirez stranded. The final score 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Connors will now meet Vitas Gerulaitis in the semi-finals.
The unseeded Dutch player, Tom Okker, took an early lead over Ilie Nastase. Okker won the first set 7-5 and took advantage of some temperamental play by the Rumanian to go 5-1 up in the second set. With the second set under his belt Okker dropped the third 2-6. However he came back in the fourth with some strong play.
Nastase, who had defeated the American Roscoe Tanner earlier in the tournament, had a disappointing match. Commentators said he threw the game away with needless demonstrations and complaints.
Matchpoint with Nastase to serve. The first one a fault and the second is put away easily by the seasoned Okker. Okker wins the match 7-5, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Nastase left the court to learn he had become the first player to be banned from a Grand Slam tournament. The first major tournament he will miss will miss will be the U.S. open.
