Background: Eight young Australians have just completed a crossing of the so called 'Dead Heart' of the continent by dune buggies....a crossing that most local dwellers said could not be done. Starting 200 miles form Alice Springs, they drove 780 miles across the Simpson Desert and returned 10 days later. Cliff like sand dunes on the route have prevented conventional vehicles from making it....but the dune buggies succeeded, much to the consternation of local wild life.
SYNOPSIS: Dune buggies....wide-wheeled fun vehicles being used for serious business in the 'Dead Heart' of Australia. Eight young Australians have just used these vehicles to cross the Simpson Desert and refute claims by outback experts that it could not be done.
And local wildlife, such as this dingo, did not approve.
The expedition travelled seven-hundred-and-80 miles across the Simpson Desert and returned ten days later. because of huge sand dunes, some of them rising tow hundred feet high, conventional vehicles have been unable to make the crossing. Some of the dunes rise gently and ten fall away abruptly like a cliff face. Another problem is extreme temperatures -- hot by day and cold by night. The town of Oodnadatta is where the expedition gathered for the crossing, before driving to Birdsville on the edge of the Simposon desert. The drivers will return within 12 months it make a round trip non-stop.
