  • Description

The Shah of Iran began a State visit to Egypt on Wednesday (8 January).

He was warmly embraced by President Sadat as he had the Empress Farah stepped off their aircraft in Cairo. After the ceremony at the airport the couple drove off in an open car to the Kubbe? Palace where they are staying.

The Shah's visit is seen as extremely important on the changing face of Middle East politics. Political observers say it is the most significant step he has taken so far in trying to win friends among the Arab states.

Iran has been estranged from Egypt since the days of President Nasser's intransigence, when Iran had closer relations with Israel. The Shah's visit is the culmination of a year-long courtship by the Egyptians.

The most immediate benefit for the Egyptians will be the injection of urgently needed investment. The two countries have already signed protocols under which Iran will provide Egypt with GBP360 million sterling (850 million US dollars) in aid.

But Iran also needs Egyptian help. The country's present position -- and its consolidation -- depends on a lasting peace in the Middle East.

The danger is another potentially more serious war in the area, which could trigger upheavals in the Persian Gulf. Iran fears any indefinite closure of the Suez Canal, upon which she is counting for her growing volume of trade with Europe.
