  • Description

The people of Navan in the Republic of Ireland anticipate a boom in their community with the establishment near the town of a mine to extract lead and zinc.

The mine will offer the local people about five hundred jobs -- but not for two years.

In the meantime, Navan -- famous throughout the Irish Republic for its furniture industry -- faces lean times. Half a dozen factories have closed down recently leaving more than three handed people unemployed.

There is little prospect of those out of a job finding work in the town in the near future -- but they are reluctant to move in case they mise out on the mineral boom starting in 1974.

A Visnews camera crew which has bene working in the Irish Republic produced this film report on Navan -- a town in a quandary.
