SYNOPSIS: Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen -- to where on Saturday the body of the late King Frederick the Ninth was carried. Flags throughout the Danish capital have been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect to the King who had ruled the country for nearly a quarter of a century. Thousands of people watched silently as the coffin carrying the King's body was taken from the hospital where he died, through the streets, to the Castle.

The King's body will lie in the Knight's Hall until it is carried to the Christiansborg Palace Chapel, where it will lie in state for three days.

And it was at Christiansborg Palace on Saturday that fifty-thousand people gathered to watch a simple ceremony at which Queen Margrethe was proclaimed Denmark's first woman sovereign.

The Queen is daughter of the late King, and is 31.
