  • Description

PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO OF CAMEROUN ATTENDED THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY ??? A NEW AIRPORT IN YAOUNDE, THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL, ON SATURDAY (17 FEBRUARY).

THE NEED FOR A NEW AIRPORT IN YAOUNDE HAS INCREASED STEADILY OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS MATCHING THE GROWTH IN THE AMOUNT OF AIR TRAFFIC AND THE SIZE OF INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT - WHICH THE CAPITAL'S OLD TERMINAL COULD NO LONGER HANDLE.

IN THE NEW BUILDINGS GREAT EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE SPEEDY AND EFFICIENT HANDLING OF PASSENGERS WITH THE PROVISION OF MANY CUSTOMS AND BAGGAGE HANDLING POINTS.

THE PROJECT, WHICH TOOK ABOUT 13 MONTHS TO BUILD AT A COST OF 230,000,000 C.F.A., WAS OFFICIALLY HANDED OVER TO THE PRESIDENT AND THE COUNTRY BY THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS, DR. BERNARD FONLON.

PLANS FOR EXTENDING THE NEW BUILDINGS ARE ALREADY UNDER REVIEW INCLUDING THE PROVISION OF AN ARCADE CONTAINING SHOPS AND A CINEMA.

SATURDAY'S CEREMONY FELL ON THE EVE OF THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ACCESSION TO POWER OF PRESIDENT AHIDJO.

THE 45-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT WAS PRIME MINISTER OF CAMEROUN UNDER FRENCH RULE FROM 1958 UNTIL THE COUNTRY ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960. IN MAY OF THAT YEAR HE WAS OFFICIALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT AND HAS HELD THE POST EVER SINCE.
