  • Description

A LARGE CROWD HAD GATHERED INSIDE A CIVIL COURTROOM IN BANGKOK, THE THAI CAPITAL ON OCTOBER 22, WHEN THE CHIEF JUDGE NAMED THE ADMINISTRATORS OF THE ESTATES OF THE LATE THAI PRIME MINISTER, FIELD MARSHAL SARIT THANARAT, WHOSE FORTUNE IS ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN FORTY MILLION POUNDS STERLING.

INVESTIGATING TEAMS HAVE FOUND THAT AT LEAST HALF OF MARSHAL SARIT'S FORTUNE WAS BUILT-UP BY MISAPPROPRIATING GOVERNMENT AND STATE LOTTERY FUNDS.

AFTER CONSIDERING THE PARTIES APPLICATIONS, THE COURT APPOINTED MAJOR SETHA THANARAT AND MADAM THANPUYING VICHITRA, AS ADMINISTRATOR AND ADMINISTRATIVE OF THE ESTATES. THE PARTIES CONCERNED WERE NOT IN COURT; THEY WERE REPRESENTED BY THEIR LAWYERS. THEIR PORTRAITS, TAKEN AT THE FIRST HEARING, WERE EXHIBITED IN COURT.

THE CASE, WHICH HAS EXCITED GREAT INTEREST IN THAILAND WAS BROUGHT TO COURT BY THE LATE PREMIER'S SONS: MAJOR SETHA THANARAT AND LIEUTENANT SOMCHAI THANARAT, BOTH OF WHOM SOUGHT TO BECOME THE JOINT ADMINISTRATORS OF THEIR FATHER'S ESTATE. THE CASE WAS CONTESTED BY THEIR FATHER'S WIDOW, MADAM THANPUYING VICHITRA, WHO IS THE STEP-MOTHER OF THE PLAINTIFFS.

MARSHAL SARIT THANARAT, WHO DIED LAST DECEMBER, HAD THIRTY MISTRESSES OF 'MINOR' WIVES AS THEY ARE REFERRED TO IN THAILAND. IT'S BEEN FOUND THAT SOME OF THE MISAPPROPRIATED PUBLIC FUNDS HAD BEEN GIVEN TO THESE WOMEN.
