  • Description

NIGERIAN FEDERAL FORCES HAVE LIBERATED A BIAFRAN-HELD VILLAGE ON THE BANKS OF THE CROSS RIVER. THE LIBERATION FOLLOWED A BIG OFFENSIVE LAST WEEK.

THE VILLAGE OF EDIBA, WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 5000 PEOPLE, HAD BEEN IN THE HANDS OF BREAKAWAY BIAFRA FOR SOME WEEKS. IN THE BATTLE LEADING UP TO THE LIBERATION, IT WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY RUINED.

THE FEDERAL FORCES WERE LED BY COLONEL BENJAMIN ADEKUNLE. LAST WEEK HIS TROOPS SHELLED THE BIAFRAN-HELD TOWN OF AROCHUKU, WHICH IS ALSO ON THE BANKS OF THE CROSS RIVER.

THE AREA IN WHICH THE LATEST ACTIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IS ABOUT 40 MILES NORTH-WEST OF THE STRATEGIC TOWN OF CALABAR. THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS FROM LAGOS THAT BIAFRAN FORCES ARE RETREATING WESTWARDS.

AFTER THE LIBERATION OF EDIBA, THE VILLAGERS JOINED IN CELEBRATION WITH THE FEDERAL TROOPS. THEY HAD BEEN HIDING IN THE SURROUNDING JUNGLES DURING THE REBEL OCCUPATION.
