Background: The leader of SWAPO, the organisation for the liberation of Namibia (South West Africa), Mr Sam Nujoma, arrived in Liberia on Tuesday (4 February) for talks with President William Tolbert.

Welcoming the SWAPO delegation, President Tolbert noted the changing situation in southern Africa where freedom and human dignity were denied to millions of blacks. He said new opportunities for self determination were now being evolved.

Mr Nujoma said that his visit symbolised the friendship and keen interest Liberia had towards her African brothers.

The day before the SWAPO delegation arrived in Monrovia, the Liberian Government announced trade and diplomatic relations with Portugal. Mr Nujoma praised the Government for its action and said that the attitude shown by Portugal towards her African holdings warranted close ties with the former colonialists.
