    MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND ITALIAN STUDENTS CARRYING COMMUNIST BANNERS AND NORTH VIETNAMESE FLAGS MARCHED ON THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN ROME YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR. THOUSANDS OF POLICE AND CARABINIERE WERE PLACED AROUND THE BUT NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.

    TRAFFIC WAS SNARLED FOR THREE HOURS AS THE MARCHERS MADE THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CITY TO THE EMBASSY. THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD EARLIER CONVERGED ON ROME FROM VARIOUS RALLY POINTS AROUND THE CITY. TO AVOID A CLASH WITH THE AUTHORITIES, THE MARCHERS VEERED AWAY FROM STREETS LEADING TO THE EMBASSY AND INSTEAD GATHERED IN SEVERAL AREAS NEARBY TO LISTEN TO SPEECHES CONDEMNING THE PRESENCE OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN VIETNAM.

    THE MARCHERS CARRIED PLACARDS BEARING EFFIGIES OF MARX, LENIN, STALIN, MAO TSE-TUNG AND HO CHI MINH. THEY ALSO WORE ARM BANDS WITH THE MOTTO "LONG LIVE RED SOCIALIST VIETNAM". LONG BANNERS WITH THE WORDS "U.S.A. AND U.S.S.R. ASSASSINS AND TRAITORS" FLUTTERED OVER THE ORDERLY PROCESSION.
