    THOUSANDS OF MARXIST COMMUNISTS DEMONSTRATED IN FRONT OF THE GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCE IN CALCUTTA ON WEDNESDAY (18 MARCH) IN SUPPORT OF A BID BY THEIR LEADER, MR. JOYTI BASU, TO FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE COLLAPSE OF THE RULING COALITION.

    THE DEMONSTRATION CAME IN THE WAKE OF BLOODY CLASHES ON TUESDAY IN WHICH 25 PEOPLE DIED. TUESDAY'S FIGHTING BROKE OUT BETWEEN SUPPORTERS OF THE MARXIST COMMUNISTS AND OTHER PARTIES DURING A 24 HOUR STRIKE CALLED BY THE MARXISTS TO PROTEST AGAINST THE BREAK-UP OF THE COALITION GOVERNMENT WHICH THEY DOMINATED.

    THERE WERE REPORTS IN NEW DELHI THAT THE GOVERNOR, MR. DHAVAN, HAD BEEN DIRECTED TO ALLOW MR. BASU TO FORM A MINISTRY ONLY IF HE CAN SHOW THAT HE COMMANDS THE SUPPORT OF A MAJORITY. SINCE EIGHT LEFTIST PARTIES HAVE REFUSED TO JOIN A MINISTRY LED BY THE MARXISTS, HIS CHANCES SEEM BLEAK.

    THE MARXISTS ALSO MOURNED THE DEATH OF JOT SINGH, A JUTE MILL WORKER, KILLED IN TUESDAY'S CLASHES.
