  • Description

Two men and a girl set off from New York on Monday (September 21) to make the transatlantic trip to Paris by helium-filled balloon.

But only hours after the balloonists left the launch-point at East Hampton, Long Island, New York, they began radioing that they were in difficulties.

On Tuesday (22 August) came the news that U.S. Coast-guard cutters were searching an area off the Newfoundland coast fro them after reports that they had plunged into the sea.

The three balloonists are 32 year-old New York Commodity broker Rod Anderson, his wife actress Pamela Brown, aged 28, and pilot Malcolm Brighton, aged 32, an aeronautical engineer from Farnham in Surrey, England.

Peter Dean, Manager of the project estimated that the balloonists hit the water within 30 minutes after sending a distress call on Monday night (21 September) "We'll call you again when we hit the water," were the last words heard from the balloon.

The crew carried a four-man raft, parachute flares, medical supplies, and large amounts of food. They said their gondola would float if it came down in the sea.
