  • Description

Merewether Beach, Newcastle, was the scene recently of the 1960 Australian Surf Championships with all six states represented.

A crowd of 12,000 watched the carnival's most spectacular feature, the March Past with the cream of the men who guard Australia's beaches. The title for the smartest turn-out went to Queensland's Bundaberg team, with the host team, Merewether, second.

The event brought together some of the finest surf swimmers from beaches all around the coast. A wave of excitement greeted the semi-final of the Senior Surfboat race, greatest thrill of the programme.

Crowds cheered the Wanda Club boat, as it tried to negotiate the waves which eventually capsized it, throwing oars and crewmen into the boiling surf. The boat was damaged beyond repair. In the same event, the Bondi Club boat fared no better. A heavy breaker overturned the boat and a following wave swamped it completely. Crewmen and oars took the untimely plunge and one car snapped under the strain. Manly crew members eventually pushed their boat to victory in gruelling race. They contributed to New South Wales retaining the championship... 26 1/2 points ahead of the next state, Queensland.
