  • Description

FURTHER STATIC TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) ON THE FRENCH STAGE FOR THE ROCKET WHICH WILL LAUNCH A EUROPEAN-BUILT SATELLITE.

FRANCE IS PROVIDING THE SECOND STAGE, AND YESTERDAY'S TEST OF ITS ROCKET MOTOR WAS APPARENTLY A COMPLETE SUCCESS. IT WAS CARRIED OUT AT A SPECIAL SITE AT VERNON, A FEW MILES NORTH-WEST OF PARIS.

ZERO-HOUR, AND SHAFTS OF FLAME BURST FROM THE ROCKET'S EXHAUST AS ITS MOTORS WHINE INTO A CRESCENDO OF LIFE. MORE TESTS HAVE TO BE MADE BEFORE THE FIRST ACTUAL TEST FIRING IS MADE FROM WOOMERA, IN AUSTRALIA, IN 1966.

THE ROCKET IS BEING BUILT BY A CONSORTIUM FROM SIX COUNTRIES UNDER THE TITLE OF ELDO (EUROPEAN LAUNCHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION).

THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT STAGE WILL BE BRITAIN'S BLUE STREAK ROCKET, WHICH MADE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT FROM WOOMERA RECENTLY. THE THIRD STAGE IS BEING DESIGNED IN WEST GERMANY.

THE SATELLITE IS BEING CONSTRUCTED IN ITALY, WHILE BELGIUM AND HOLLAND ARE ALSO CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROGRAMME. ITS OBJECTIVES ARE PURELY CIVIL.
