  • Description

A NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL AND A TECHNICAL WING FORMED THE EXTENSIONS TO NAIROBI'S STAREHE "BOYS' TOWN", WHICH WERE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY KENYA'S VICE-PRESIDENT, JOSEPH MURUMBI, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY).

THE STAREHE CENTRE BEGAN ITS VALUABLE REHABILITATION WORK IN 1959. IT WAS FOUNDED BY ITS PRESENT DIRECTOR, MR. GEOFFREY GRIFFIN, TO GIVE A HOME TO THE MANY STREET WAIFS OF NAIROBI. STARTING WITH NO RESOURCES OTHER THAN TWO TIN HUTS, THE USE OF A LOCAL SOCIAL HALL, AND A GRANT OF GBP500 FROM THE SHELL COMPANY, THE STAREHE CENTRE HAS GROWN INTO THE "BOYS' TOWN" OF EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA. THERE IS NO OTHER CENTRE OF ITS TYPE ANYWHERE IN AFRICA.

BOYS ARE ADMITTED TO THE STAREHE CENTRE AFTER FULL AND THOROUGH PRELIMINARY INQUIRIES HAVE BEEN MADE INTO THEIR BACKGROUND AND FAMILY CIRCUMSTANCES. ONLY IF THERE IS NO CHANCE OF THEIR RENEWING LIFE IN THE AREAS THEY CAME FROM ARE THEY ADMITTED. MOST OF THE BOYS ORIGINALLY COME TO NAIROBI TO ESCAPE FROM BROKEN HOMES OR OTHER TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES.

KENYA HAS FOR SOME TIME BEEN SHORT OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS, AND THE IDEA TO INCORPORATE ONE AT THE STAREHE CENTRE WAS FORMULATED IN 1964. NOW THE SCHOOL IS SETTING HIGH STANDARD OF TEACHING, SPORT, DISCIPLINE AND EXTRA-MURAL ACTIVITIES. BOYS FROM ORDINARY SCHOOLS COMPETE FOR PLACED AT THE STAREHE SCHOOL, WHICH DOES NOT ALWAYS FILL ITS SECONDARY SCHOOL VACANCIES FROM ITS PRIMARY SCHOOL LEAVERS.

VICE-PRESIDENT MURUMBI PAID TRIBUTE TO THE WORK OF THE CENTRE, AND OFFICIALLY OPENED THE SECONDARY SCHOOL AND TECHNICAL SCHOOL. HE WAS DEPUTISING FOR PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA, WHO WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND AS PLANNED. ALSO PRESENT AT THE CEREMONY WAS THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL SERVICES, MR. NYAGA.
