  • Description

EVERY YEAR IN JANUARY THE ANNUAL OPIUM HARVEST IS COLLECTED IN THE POPPY FIELDS OF LAOS, THAILAND AND BURMA. THE OPIUM FIELDS ARE ILLEGAL IN LAOS, BUT WITH THE GOVERNMENT BUSY FIGHTING NORTH VIETNAMESE INTRUDERS THERE IS LITTLE LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND THE PEASANTS COLLECT THE HARVEST WITH NO FEAR OF ARREST.

THE POPPY FIELDS ARE SITUATED IN THE HIGH MOUNTAIN VALLEYS. THE SEEDS, PLANTED IN SEPTEMBER, FLOWER IN JANUARY AND THE HARVEST TAKEN.

LATE IN THE AFTERNOON, THE WHITE OR PURPLE POPPY PODS ARE SCORED ON THE SURFACE WITH A TWO-PRONGED HAND-KNIFE, AND THE WHITE SAP, THAT OOZES OUT ALONG THE SCORE-MARKS, IS LEFT OVERNIGHT.

AS THE DAWN RISES, THE HARVESTERS FAN OUT INTO THE FIELDS TO SCRAPE OFF THE NOW BROWN SAP AND COLLECT IT IN METAL CONTAINERS STRUNG ROUND THEIR NECKS.

THIS RAW OPIUM IS CRUDELY REFINED IN THE VILLAGE. BOILED IN WATER, THE EXTRACT IS FILTERED THROUGH BAMBOO PAPER. IN THIS STATE THE OPIUM IS READY TO BE SMOKED.

FOR THE YAO TRIBE OF NORTHERN LAOS, THE OPIUM HARVEST IS THEIR ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME. THE DRUG IS SOLD, MOSTLY TO SMUGGLERS COMING FROM THAILAND.
