  • Description

A heavy police guard was on hand at Kingston airport, May 17, to control the demonstrations that greeted Prime Minister Manley, of Jamaica, on his return from the Port-of-Spain conference, which discussed the formation of a West Indian Federation.

In recent months the campaign against Federation, led by the Jamaica Labour Party, has increased in tempo and demonstrations against West Indian unity have been staged throughout the island. The next inter-island conference takes place in London on May 31.

As the Prime Minister left his aircraft a large section of the crowd held banners and placards above their heads and pushed against the police cordon. A counter demonstration was started by Federal supporters who sang and dance until Prime Minister Manley left in his car.
