  • Description

DAMASCUS, THE SYRIAN CAPITAL, IS BELIEVED TO BE THE OLDEST CITY IN THE WORLD STILL INHABITED. IT HAS WITHSTOOD REPEATED ONSLAUGHTS FROM THE DAYS OF ABRAHAM: IT WAS SHELLED AND BOMBED BY THE FRENCH IN THE 1920'S AND AGAIN IN 1945. THE LAST COUP IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR WAS ONE OF THE BLOODIEST OUT TODAY THE CITY IS QUIET.

DAMASCUS COULD NOT EXIST WITHOUT THE RIVER BARADA, WHICH SUPPLIES WATER NOT ONLY FOR THE CITY BUT FOR THE EXTENSIVE ORCHARDS OF APRICOTS, FIGS, PISTACHIOS AND ALMONDS.

THE CITY STREETS ARE NARROW AND PROTECTED OVERHEAD, AND CRAMMED WITH VENDORS OF ARABIAN DELICACIES AND AMERICAN SOFT DRINK AND BRASS POTS. HIGH WALLS CONCEAL THE MAGNIFICENT PRIVATE HOUSES BEHIND THEM.

DAMASCUS HAS MORE THAN 26,000 STUDENTS ATTENDING UNIVERSITY OR UNDERTAKING TERFIARY EDUCATION.

IN MODERN, AS IN EARLY TIMES, THE CITY HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY FIRES. THE GREAT MOSQUE WAS GUTTED IN 1893. IN ALL, DAMASCUS HAS 240 BUT MANY ARE IN RUINS AND ONLY 70 ARE STILL IN USE.
