  • Description

General Kassem, Iraqi Premier, July 27 laid the foundation stone of a powerful radio transmitting station at Ctesiphon, a few miles from the ruins of the 2,000 years old Parthian capital, Russian engineers and technicians - under the recent Iraqi-Hussien economic agreement - have already begun working on the new 'Radio Baghdad.'
At a cost of "several million pounds", the station, when finished in 1960, will be more powerful than any of its competitors, including Colonel Nasser's "Voice of the Arabs," which has long held undisputed away.

In a Baghdad press conference July 29, Premier Kassem, tense with anger, declared an all-out war against Communist inspired demonstrations and interference. He disclosed a plot for mass disturbances planned for July 14. One after another he held up plans, maps and lists of names. Stop this underground activity and behave decently," he said. "This is the last warning I give. Don't drive me to use force."
The Communist-dominated "Popular Resistance Force" was relieved of its duties July 29. General Ahmed Salem el Abdi, Iraq's Military Governor, decreed up to three years imprisonment for anyone wearing the PRF uniform. The force, a semi-military organisation, supported Premier Kassem during the revolution. A number of its members, however, clashed with the regime during the recent Kirkuk rioting."
