  • Description

Indian Chief Ministers and Food Ministers met in New Delhi on Thursday (June 14) to discuss the country's critical food situation.

The Indian Agriculture Minister Fakh-Ruddin Alli Ahmed told the Ministers from the various Indian states that it would not be possible to tide over India's present food problems without the maximum of official procurement of food combined with strict discipline in food distribution.

But as the state ministers met at the Vigyan Bhavan, outside the building a former Chief Minister of the Punjab Mr. Prakash Singh Badal and 30 members of the opposition Akali party in the Punjab legislature were demonstrating for better prices for the farmers.

Following the nationalisation of the food grains trade the procurement of grain by Government agencies has fallen far below expectations.

Farmers are reported to be holding back grain thereby threatening the public distribution agencies.

Now the Indian Government is faced with the prospect of raising GBP200 million sterling(520 million US dollars) in the next few weeks to buy food to avoid famine in the autumn. After big purchases by The People's Republic of China and Russia, there is now a seller' market for grain.

In some areas of India there is an acute shortage of grain, after years of monsoon failure.
