  • Description

THE SHAH OF IRAN AND EMPRESS FARAH VISITED THE TOWN OF KAKHK YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AS THEY TOURED SOME OF THE WORST HIT AREAS IN LAST WEEK'S TWIN EARTHQUAKE DISASTER IN WHICH 12,000 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES. LATER THAT NIGHT, TWO AIRCRAFT OF BRITAIN'S ROYAL AIR FORCE FLEW EMERGENCY SUPPLIES TO IRAN AS PART OF THE WORLD-WIDE RELIEF EFFORT THAT IS UNDERWAY.

EMPRESS FARAH WEPT AS SHE LISTENED TO TALES OF DEATH AND DEVASTATION. IN ADDITION TO THE DEAD, UNOFFICIAL FIGURES PLACE THE INJURED AT 50,000 AND 100,000 HOMELESS.

THE ROYAL COUPLE GAVE ORDERS THAT ALL CHILDREN ORPHANED BY THE QUAKE SHOULD BE RAISED UNDER THEIR PRIVATE CARE AND PATRONAGE.

KAKHK, THE CENTRE OF SATURDAY'S QUAKE, HAS BEEN DESTROYED, AND ABOUT 4,500 OF THE POPULATION ARE REPORTED DEAD OR MISSING.

THE ONLY STRUCTURE LEFT STANDING IN THE VILLAGE, RENOWNED FOR ITS OPIUM, IS AN OLD RELIGIOUS SHRINE.

AS THE SHAH AND THE EMPRESS TOURED THE SHATTERED VILLAGE YESTERDAY, SEVERAL EARTH TREMORS WERE FELT IN THE AREA, BUT NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.

THE SHAH AND THE EMPRESS BEGAN THEIR TOUR WITH A VISIT TO BIRJAND, A FARMING COMMUNITY IN KHORASSAN PROVINCE.

THEY RETURNED TO TEHERAN LAST NIGHT AFTER ORDERING THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ALL NECESSARY MEASURES TO PROTECT THE SURVIVORS FROM HUNGER AND DISEASE AND TO PROVIDE THEM WITH SHELTER.

PRIME MINISTER AMIR ABBAS HOVIEDA AND OTHER MINISTERS WERE ALREADY IN THE STRICKEN AREA SUPERVISING RELIEF AND RESCUE OPERATIONS.

HELP FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD IS ALSO POURING IN. LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY), TWO C-180 HERCULES TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT CARRIED 45 TENTS AND 3,600 BLANKERS FROM VICTIMS OF THE QUAKE INTO MEHRABAB AIRPORT. THE SUPPLIES WERE HANDED OVER TO IRAN'S RED LION AND SON SOCIETY, THE IRANIAN EQUIVALENT OF THE RED CROSS, FOR DISTRIBUTION.
