    WEARING THE UNIFORM OF COLONEL-IN-CHIEF OF THE SCOTS GUARDS, WHOSE FIRST BATTALION COLOURS WERE TROOPED, AND THE SASH OF THE ORDER OF THE THISTLE, THE QUEEN LED THE ROYAL PROCESSION ONTO THE PARADE GROUND.

    SHE WAS CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, AS A COLONEL OF THE WELSH GUARDS, AND THE DUKE OF KENT, HER PERSONAL ADC, IN THE UNIFORM OF A MAJOR IN THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS.

    002 FLEW OVER THE CITY BEHIND A FLIGHT OF RAF LIGHTNING FIGHTERS. IT THEN SWOOPED LOW OVER BUCKINGHAM PALACE IN A BIRTHDAY SALUTE TO THE QUEEN.

    THE CEREMONY WAS WATCHED BY PRINCESS ANNE, PRINCE ANDREW, THE QUEEN MOTHER, PRINCESS MARGARET WITH LORD LINLEY, THE DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER, THE DUCHESS OF KENT AND PRINCESS ALEXANDRA WITH HER HUSBAND MR ANGUS OGILVY.
