    FIFTY DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED AND TWO SLIGHTLY INJURED DURING SCUFFLES WITH POLICE AT SEATTLE AIRPORT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE FAILURE OF CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS TO HIRE COLOURED LABOUR FOR PROJECTS AT THE AIRPORT.

    THERE ARE 12 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AT THE AIRPORT. IN SEPTEMBER, PROTESTERS BLOCKED THE RUNWAYS TO FORCE THE CONTRACTORS TO HIRE COLOURED LABOUR.

    YESTERDAY, 300 OF THEM WERE DEMONSTRATING AGAIN, THIS TIME MARCHING ROUND THE TERMINAL BUILDING AND BLOCKING ITS COUNTERS TO AIRPORT PASSENGERS. THEY WERE PROTESTING THAT THE CONTRACTORS HAD NOT COMPLIED WITH A FEDERAL COURT RULING THAT THEY SHOULD HIRE COLOURED TRAINEES.

    THE AUTHORITIES HAD DECLARED THE COUNTRY IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN ANTICIPATION OF THE PROTEST. POLICE FROM SEVERAL TOWNS HAD BEEN SENT TO THE AIRPORT.

    SCUFFLES BROKE OUT WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS CLASHED WITH POLICE GUARDING THE TICKET COUNTERS.
