  • Description

President Habib Bourguibe was re-elected unopposed for his fourth consecutive five-year term as head of state in elections held in Tunisia on Sunday (3 November).

As Tunisians watched results being tabulated in the early hours of the morning it became obvious that President Bourguiba and his ruling Destour Socialist Party had received almost total support from the electorate.

The President was unopposed. There was a 96.75 per cent turn-out at the polls, and 99.98 per cent of those voting endorsed President Bourguiba's re-election.

The elections were also to find incumbents for the 112 seats of the National Assembly. All candidates belonged to the ruling party, all were unopposed and all were elected.

President Bourguiba's success will mean the constitution of Tunisia will have to be changed. Until now a head-of-state could only serve for three consecutive terms.

The necessary amendment was effectively drawn up last September when the Destour Party Congress decided to make the 71-year-old Bourguiba President for life.
